BACKGROUND: Meals on Wheels of Randolph County, Inc., is a non-profit volunteer service which delivers nutritious meals to people of the Elkins area community who are unable to secure or prepare meals for themselves. They are patterned after the first program, originating in London, England, during World War II, when the British Red Cross Society and the Women’s Voluntary Service served meals to the elderly who had been bombed out of their homes during the Blitz. The program expanded throughout the British Empire, and in 1954, the first such project in America was begun in Philadelphia. The Meals on Wheels of Randolph County organizational meeting was held on December 6, 1972.
The overall objective of this program is to aid in monitoring the mental and physical condition of the elderly, disabled, chronically ill or convalescing, allowing them to live independently, with dignity and more happily in their home. It is intended to provide one hot well-balanced meal each weekday, and for some clients, much-needed daily contact with someone from outside their home.
The activities of the program are carried out primarily by volunteers with the support of three part-time employees: An Office Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator and a Field Coordinator who works within the hospital, cooperatively with the nutrition staff, to get the meals organized and out to the volunteer teams of drivers/runners for delivery.
A volunteer board of directors supervises staff and exercises authority in the affairs of the organization. The officers of the board are a president, a treasurer and a vice-president/secretary.
