BACKGROUND: The Mary L. Davis Memorial Scholarship is established to honor the wife and legacy of an extraordinary educator, mother, and grandmother whose heart for children shaped generations of students. This scholarship provides an annual One Thousand ($1,000) dollar award to support students who reflect her love of learning, kindness, and commitment to others.

Mary L. Davis taught second grade at Third Ward Elementary School for over 40 years, pouring her time, energy, and love into her classroom. Even after she retired, her devotion to her students brought her back as a substitute teacher for five more years. She volunteered weekly and read stories to pre-k through second grade students. She was known for treating every child as if they were her own, making each student feel seen, valued, and capable of success. Outside the classroom, she cherished her five grandchildren, who were the joy of her life.

Mary was kind, loving, and always willing to go the extra mile for her students and their families. Whether staying after school to help a struggling reader, offering a listening ear, or quietly making sure a child had what they needed, she lived a life of service. Her classroom was a place of warmth, stability, and encouragement, where children learned not only reading and math but also respect, compassion, and confidence.

This scholarship was created to continue Mary’s legacy by investing in students who share her values and her belief in the power of education. It is intended for students who demonstrate a commitment to learning, a heart for helping others, and a desire to give back to their communities—especially those who hope to work with children or pursue careers in education. Through this annual one thousand ($1,000) dollar award, Mary’s dedication to her students will live on in the lives and futures of the scholars who follow in her footsteps.
