Background: Lawrence and Marion Mace were lifetime West Virginians. Both were born and raised in Roane County and graduated from Spencer High School. Marion graduated as Valedictorian of the Class of 1944. Lawrence excelled on the football field, basketball court and baseball diamond, leading his high school team to an undefeated season.

In the 1950’s, Lawrence and Marion made their home in Preston County, WV and raised their family there. All four of their children attended high school in Preston County and went on to post-secondary institutions. Lawrence and Marion remained residents of Kingwood until their respective deaths in 2009 and 2025.

Lawrence and Marion valued education in all its forms. Lawrence supported his family as a blue-collar worker, with specialized technical training as an Operator at Albright Power Station. Marion loved working with children and opened a kindergarten class in her home in the 1960’s. She served on the Preston County Board of Education and also was a member of the Advisory Committee for the Preston County Educational Center (PCEC) Vocational-Technical School. Lawrence and Marion owned and operated the Kingwood Cleaners and employed workers who received on the job hands-on technical training.

Through their life experiences, Lawrence and Marion understood the importance of blue-collar jobs and the growing need for students to embrace trade and technical schools so the future generations will continue to have highly skilled workers. They also knew the value of financial assistance and how it helped their own children further their education. So, in honor of Lawrence and Marion Mace, the life they lived, and to help meet a need for today and tomorrow, The Lawrence and Marion Mace Memorial Scholarship was created to help a student fulfill his or her dream to pursue post-secondary education at a Trade School or Technical School.
