Lorene Pennington Family Scholarship Fund

The Lorene Pennington Family Scholarship Fund, established in December 2020, provides scholarships to college-bound students from Tucker County, with consideration for students from nearby counties if no qualified applicants are available.

TYPE OF FUND: Scholarship

DATE ESTABLISHED: December 2020

PURPOSE: To provide a scholarship for students in Tucker County.

DISTRIBUTION: This fund shall be used and distributed at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the Foundation for the purpose of awarding a scholarship to a college-bound student(s) from Tucker County. If there are no qualified applicants from Tucker County, the Board of Directors has the authority to choose students from other nearby counties.

VARIANCE POWER: If, in the judgment of the TCF Board of Directors, the restrictions and conditions of the fund become unnecessary, incapable of fulfillment, or inconsistent with the charitable needs of the community, the TCF Board of Directors maintains the right to modify the terms of this fund.

FUNDING: Initiated by her daughter, Lana Landry.

BACKGROUND: Lorene Elizabeth Hedrick Pennington was born in Sugarland, WV, on April 24, 1922. She was the eldest of seven children of William and Viola Hedrick. When she was a freshman in high school, she was forced to quit school to care for her younger siblings while her parents worked to support the family. However, later in life, she pursued her education and earned her GED in October 1974.

Lorene was a woman of faith who lived a Christian life. She raised three children on her own: Hugh (Karol), who lives in Kernersville, NC; Lana, who resides in Williamsburg, VA; and Steve, who continues to live in the family home in Hambleton.

Lorene Pennington passed away on May 28, 2008.
