Tucker Community Foundation holds nonprofit information session in Philippi

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (WBOY) — With the goal of offering resources and information to local nonprofits, the Tucker Community Foundation held an information session in Philippi Friday evening.

Foundation members focused the session on isolation in nonprofit work and the resources available to nonprofits through community foundations. Officials with the foundation told 12 News that they would like to partner with as many nonprofits in Barbour County as possible to strengthen the group’s goal of improving the communities that they serve.

“Foundations play a very crucial role because, as you know, most agencies don’t have enough money to cover all their costs and there are other avenues, they just have to search for them. And again, it’s all about relationships especially where we live,” Tucker Community Foundation Executive Director David Cooper said.

Those nonprofits in attendance were able to speak with and gain knowledge from one another while enhancing their potential in the community.

“There are places where we can help fund. So, we’re trying to get to those people so that they understand what’s going on from our foundation,” Cooper added. “The nice thing about partnerships, as you know, we may put $10,000 in and we do a match to one of our banks or another foundation and then we’re able to double our earnings.”

The nine counties that the Tucker Community Foundation serves are rural, which can create some challenges for the agencies in those counties. Cooper added that through his travels to the nine counties, he gets to meet with and hear about the challenges they are working through. He also said that he can make recommendations to the board about the needs of the agencies in the service area.
