BACKGROUND: Robert Andrew Poole, known as "Randy," was born on March 3, 1953. He graduated from Georgia Southern in 1975 and moved to St. Albans, WV, to work for C&P Telephone Company. In 1997, he transferred to Ashburn, Virginia, after C&P Telephone was acquired by Verizon, continuing his career as a contract officer.
Randy joined the National Ski Patrol (NSP) in 1992 and was a dedicated member of Timberline Ski Patrol from 1992-2009. He served as patrol treasurer, an Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Instructor, and a trainer for active members, leading fundraiser events to support emergency care training and Special Olympics. He was deeply committed to teaching others proper emergency skills and was widely known for his patience, humor, and leadership.
On the mountain radio, he was affectionately called "Tin Man," a nickname reflecting his incredible recovery from open-heart surgery. His resilience and love for life inspired those around him.
In 2007, Randy married Holly Horne and adopted her daughter, Amber. He also had three grown daughters, Tara, Sally Ann, and Katlin, and a granddaughter, Caroline. His kindness and sense of humor could diffuse any situation, and he was devoted to community support, organizing clothing drives and church-led mission trips across the U.S. to assist disadvantaged communities.
A lifelong member of the Episcopal Church and a leader at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Ashburn, VA, Randy was passionate about service, writing, and enjoying life’s simple moments. He often said, "Life is a journey. Roll down the window and enjoy the breeze," and "It's a beautiful thing."
Randy Poole passed away on July 4, 2009, at the age of 56. This fund continues his legacy by supporting those who dedicate their lives to emergency response and care in Tucker County.
