George W. & Marjorie H. Walburn Memorial Fund
The George W. and Marjorie H. Walburn Fund enhances educational opportunities for the people of Tucker County, honoring two lifelong learners and community servants.

DATE ESTABLISHED: May 1, 1991
PURPOSE: To enhance educational opportunities for the people of Tucker County.
DISTRIBUTION: A grant to a teacher in grades K–12 to be used for a project designed to promote learning in the specific areas of geography; and, in alternate years, a scholarship to a student residing in Tucker County who plans to major in either business administration or the teaching of geography. Selection of recipients of these grants and awards is to be made by the Scholarship Committee in consultation with school personnel such as teachers, counselors, principals, etc. In the event that no recipient is selected in a given year, the amount is to be added to the principal of the fund.
Note: Upon the expressed wishes of the family, and upon approval by the Board of Directors, grant distribution was broadened September 13, 1993, to include non-traditional students who are residents of Tucker County, but who have already graduated from any high school and are attending college.
Upon the recommendation of the Grants and/or Scholarship Committee and approval by the full Board of Directors of TCF.
VARIANCE POWER: If, in the judgment of the TCF Board of Directors, the restrictions and conditions of the fund become unnecessary, incapable of fulfillment or inconsistent with the charitable needs of the community, the TCF Board of Directors maintains the right to modify the terms of this fund.
FUNDING: A memorial gift from George W. Walburn of Hannahsville, Tucker County, in memory of his sister Marjorie Harriet Walburn (1914–1982). With the blessing of the Walburn family, on March 12, 1997, the TCF Board of Directors renamed the Memorial Fund to include the name of the donor, George W. Walburn. Mr. Walburn was a charter member of TCF and served as Vice President at the time of his death. He attended meetings faithfully and served on numerous committees, giving generously of his time and financial resources.
BACKGROUND: Marjorie Harriet Walburn was born August 5, 1914, in Cumberland, Maryland. She graduated from Pennsylvania Avenue High School in 1930, specializing in stenography, typewriting, and bookkeeping, and later completed college courses in accounting, business management, and personnel supervision. She was employed by the Allegany County Board of Education and then as assistant to the president at the Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C., retiring in 1977. A member of multiple genealogical and professional societies, she passed away in 1982.
George William Walburn was born in 1911 in Cumberland and passed away December 26, 1996. He graduated from Frostburg State and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and retired as a lieutenant colonel from the Maryland National Guard. After a long career in Baltimore County Public Schools, he retired to Tucker County, where he became an active community member. Known locally as “Uncle Sam” for his appearances at July 4th events, he was involved with the Tucker Community Chorus, Planning Commission, Rotary, Kiwanis, and many other civic groups. His impact continues through this educational fund.
